Masters studies are generally taught courses, which cover courses from postgraduate certificate to MA, MSc, MBA and LLM, enabling the student to choose subjects within the study chosen. Universities in UK and US offer full time, part time, and distance learning facilities, offering the student with the choice of not only choosing the subject, but how the students wants to study. The distant learning facility in the Staffordshire University, in its postgraduate and master study, is comprised of some of the science-based postgraduate courses. The courses are modular, letting the student to create individual working plan, which the student goes through it at his or her own pace.

Masters studies consist of elements of formal lectures, classes or seminars. It requires the student to do assignments given on project work, after which the student is needed to sit through examinations. The course may take from just six months to two years full-time, and can spread over longer time depending upon the subject choices of the student. Masters course requires the student to submit a thesis on a certain research work that he has done during his study. If the student wishes to move away to a different university, or even to another institution under the same university, before accumulating the credits for his masters award, he may do so, with the concerned university passing on his acquired credits to the other institution.
